Job Interview Preparation: Common Questions and How to Answer Them
2026-09-26 · By Haileyesus Ingidu

An interview is a conversation in which the employer wants to know three things: can you do the job, will you fit with the team, and will you be reliable. You cannot predict every question, but you can prepare for the most common ones. Good preparation makes you calmer and helps your real strengths show.
Learn about the organisation
Before the interview, read the job advertisement carefully and find out what the organisation does. Note its products or services, its location and its values. Prepare two or three questions to ask at the end, such as what a typical day in the role looks like or how success is measured. Asking thoughtful questions shows genuine interest.
Common questions and how to approach them
Tell me about yourself
Give a short professional summary: your background, your main strengths and why you want this role. Aim for about one minute and do not repeat your entire CV.
Why do you want this job?
Connect your skills to the needs of the role. Mention what attracts you to the organisation, not only the salary.
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Choose strengths that match the job and support them with a short example. For weaknesses, name a real but manageable one and explain what you are doing to improve it.
Describe a difficult situation you handled
Use the STAR method: describe the Situation, the Task you had, the Action you took and the Result. This keeps your answer clear and focused.
Practical preparation
- Practise answers aloud with a friend or in front of a mirror.
- Prepare copies of your CV, certificates and identity documents.
- Plan your journey and arrive 10 to 15 minutes early.
- Dress neatly and appropriately for the workplace.
Online interviews
For video interviews, test your connection, camera and microphone in advance. Sit in a quiet, well-lit place and look at the camera when you speak. Keep your phone on silent and close unnecessary apps. Have a charger and a backup contact number ready in case the call drops.
After the interview
Send a short thank-you message within a day. If you are not selected, politely ask for feedback. Each interview, successful or not, teaches you something that improves the next one.
